Village Health Worker Jailed Nine Years for Ivory Possession

A Mushambi Village health worker, Edison Gonamombe, 54, was yesterday sentenced to nine years in prison after being found in possession of 17.02 kilograms of raw ivory.

Gonamombe was arrested in January following a police operation in Whitecliff, Harare, where detectives posed as potential buyers of an elephant tusk.

Acting on a tip-off, officers arranged to meet the suspects at a service station along the Harare–Bulawayo Road.

When the deal was confirmed, detectives arrested Gonamombe, while his 39-year-old accomplice escaped and remains at large.

The unmarked tusk was recovered at the scene.

Investigations revealed that the pair were part of a network sourcing buyers for raw ivory around Harare.
