A 19-year-old student lost his life after being electrocuted while working on a ZESA power line in Budiriro 1 Extension, Harare, on Wednesday, 22 October 2025.
The Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company confirmed the tragedy, expressing deep sorrow over the incident. In a statement, the utility company said the teenager was reportedly attached to a private contractor at the time of the accident.
“ZETDC extends its deepest condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the 19-year-old student,” the statement read.

“Our preliminary investigations indicate that no permit or authorisation had been issued for any work on the Medium Voltage (MV) line at this location.”
According to ZETDC, the contractor involved was operating outside the company’s jurisdiction and safety protocols, a move that likely contributed to the fatal electrocution.
The power utility reiterated that safety remains its top priority, urging the public to ensure all electrical work on the national grid is authorised and supervised by qualified ZETDC personnel.
“We urge everyone to engage ZETDC for all electrical works on the electricity grid to avoid unnecessary loss of life,” the company said.
Authorities are expected to conduct further investigations to determine the full circumstances surrounding the student’s death.
