As the farming season approaches, agricultural experts are encouraging farmers across Zimbabwe to plan carefully and make informed decisions to ensure better yields. Speaking to Zim Now at the Zimbabwe-China Tobacco Expo, Seed Co commercial agronomist Torai Mutseka emphasized the importance of purchasing certified seeds from reputable suppliers.
Mutseka warned that some farmers have fallen victim to counterfeit seeds sold in informal markets such as Mbare, resulting in poor germination and significant losses. He urged farmers to buy seeds from recognized outlets such as Farm & City, established supermarkets, wholesale shops, and other licensed dealers.
“Farmers must choose climate-smart seed varieties suitable for their regions,” said Mutseka. “For instance, small grains perform best in natural regions four and five, where rainfall is low. Matching the right seed to the right environment is key to productivity.”

Representative from Kutsaga Tobacco Research Board echoed similar sentiments, advising tobacco farmers to work closely with qualified agronomists throughout the season to achieve high-quality yields. Proper collaboration, they said, helps farmers follow recommended practices on soil management, pest control, and curing techniques.
Agricultural experts further recommend that farmers start land preparations early, test their soils, and plan crop rotations to maintain soil fertility. Timely access to inputs and adherence to extension advice could make the difference between profit and loss in the coming season.
With climate patterns becoming increasingly unpredictable, careful planning, use of certified seeds, and adherence to scientific guidance remain vital pillars for sustainable farming in Zimbabwe.
