Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) has dismissed as false claims that athletes in Zimbabwe will be required to pay annual licensing fees beginning next year.
In their statement, SRC responded to a communication from the National Athletics Association of Zimbabwe (NAAZ) dated September 27, 2025, which suggested that from January 1, 2026, athletes would be required to pay an annual fee of USD7.00, inclusive of an SRC levy.
SRC clarified that no such directive had been issued. “The SRC wishes to advise that this communication is FALSE and must be DISREGARDED. The Government has NOT ISSUED any directive on licencing of athletes to the SRC or to any National Association,” said the commission.

The commission emphasized that in terms of the Sports and Recreation Commission Act [Chapter 25:15], all sporting and recreational activities must be authorized by the SRC. Furthermore, it reminded registered national associations of their responsibility to remit annual levies for their members in accordance with the law.
“It is the responsibility of registered National Associations to remit annual levies for their members in terms of section 26 of the Act as read with section 18 of the Sports and Recreation Commission Act (General) Regulations, 1995,” the SRC said.
This clarification comes amid confusion in the athletics community after the NAAZ circular suggested that athletes would face new financial obligations in order to participate in competitions from 2026.
