
Wi-STEM Africa has appointed Dr. Tendai Zengeni as its new Regional Director for Southern Africa, a move expected to strengthen efforts to integrate more women and girls into science, technology, engineering, and mathematics across the region.

Dr. Zengeni is a Zimbabwean researcher with a PhD in Fiber Optics and Nanophotonics and a Post-Doctoral Fellowship in High-Speed Optical Computing. She is a lecturer and Chairperson of AI, Software Engineering, and Computer Science at Africa University and currently serves as Vice Chairperson of the Board at NetOne Cellular.
Beyond academia, she is an African Women in Tech & AI Fellow, a member of UNESCO’s Women for Ethical AI, and a UNESCO AI Expert Without Borders, where she has been active in promoting digital inclusion, ethical AI, and capacity-building programs for underserved communities.
Announcing her appointment, Dr. Zengeni said she was committed to “developing impactful programs and strengthening partnerships that empower women and girls, and create new STEM opportunities.”
Wi-STEM Africa is a pan-African initiative focused on bridging gender gaps in STEM by creating mentorship, research, and innovation platforms for women across the continent.
