Chipinge Man Sentenced to 18 Months for assaulting Uncle in domestic dispute

 

A 24-year-old man was sentenced to 18 months’ imprisonment for assaulting his 48-year-old uncle during a domestic dispute in Musani Village, Chief Mutema. The incident, which took place on the 20th of August 2025, arose after the uncle instructed the offender’s wife to prepare enough food for visitors, sparking anger and violence.

According to court proceedings, the young man first strangled his uncle and assaulted him with fists and open hands. Unsatisfied, he later armed himself with an electric cable and whipped the victim several times. The attack only ceased when the uncle fled into his bedroom for safety. He sustained bruises on both hands and shoulders as a result of the beating.

The case was heard at the Chipinge Magistrates’ Court, where the man was convicted under the Domestic Violence Act. The court imposed an 18-month prison term, but six months were suspended on condition of good behavior, while the remaining 12 months were suspended on the condition that he performs 420 hours of community service at Musani Primary School.
