The Northern Region Soccer League (NRSL) is in turmoil after N'ombeyaora coach Nesbert Saruchera openly defied a two-match suspension, taking his place on the bench during his team's recent 2-0 victory against Banket United. The move has sparked outrage and has led to a formal complaint lodged with the league by Banket United.
Saruchera had been handed a two-match ban and fined US$5,000 for unruly conduct in a prior encounter with title rivals Agama FC. The league had previously sanctioned him, noting that he was fined US$3,500 last year for similar offenses while coaching Black Rhinos, citing a history of unsportsmanlike behavior. Despite the ban, Saruchera was on the sidelines, directing his team to a crucial victory on Sunday. In a display of defiance, he refused to comment to the media post-match and reportedly exhibited aggressive behavior towards reporters.

Nelson Nzombe, the chairperson of Banket United, confirmed his club has taken official action against N'ombeyaora. “We have officially written to the NRSL about Saruchera violating his suspension by coaching from the bench during our match,” Nzombe stated. The complaint puts the NRSL's disciplinary committee under pressure to enforce its own rules and uphold the integrity of the competition. According to league rules, a coach who receives a red card is suspended for the next two games. If a suspended coach participates in a game, the team can be fined, and the coach may face a longer suspension.
The controversy comes at a critical time, with N'ombeyaora and Agama FC locked in a fierce battle for the top spot as the season nears its conclusion. Both teams secured crucial victories over the weekend, keeping the title race a nail-biting affair. N'ombeyaora’s win over Banket United was sealed by goals from top scorer Russel Chifura and Lincoln Saramaya, while Agama FC kept pace with a triumph against Karoi United.
The latest results have set the stage for a dramatic end to the season. N’ombeyaora leads the table with 66 points from 29 matches, closely followed by Agama FC with 65 points. Golden Eagles sit in third place with 52 points, still in contention. Meanwhile, Chinhoyi Stars' struggles continue as they remain in the relegation zone following a home defeat to Zambezi G & C, and Chegutu Pirates extended their unbeaten streak with a goalless draw against Black Rhinos.
