Zimbabwe’s 2025 winter wheat crop is projected to deliver more than 300 000 tonnes from over 60 000 hectares planted under the Agriculture and Rural Development Authority contract farming scheme, signalling a major boost to national food security.
ARDA Board Chairperson Ivan Craig confirmed that the wheat programme is part of a wider grain strategy.
“The wheat crop is only part of a broader plan which also includes 60 000 hectares of maize under irrigation and 40 000 hectares of sorghum. Together, ARDA is targeting more than 850 000 tonnes of grain this year,” he said.
Last year, Zimbabwe produced 467 905 tonnes of wheat from 91 000 hectares, the highest output since independence, enabling the country to cover its annual wheat requirement of around 360 000 tonnes.
The reduced hectarage this season reflects a strategic balance under ARDA’s irrigation programme, which is spreading production across multiple crops.
Deputy Minister of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development, Vangelis Haritatos, said the progress reflects government’s push for national self-sufficiency.
“This year’s crop demonstrates what can be achieved when farmers, parastatals and Government work together. It is a turning point in strengthening our food reserves,” he said.
Farmers have been urged to prepare machinery, particularly combine harvesters, to safeguard the expected yield.
