Air Zimbabwe yesterday launched daily return flights between Harare and Mutare, a move aimed at boosting domestic connectivity and supporting the Sanganai/Hlanganani World Tourism Expo set for September 10–12.
The temporary service will give exhibitors, delegates, and tourists easier access to the Eastern Highlands while testing demand for the route.
Grand Reef Aerodrome in Mutare has undergone major upgrades — including runway strengthening, terminal improvements, and safety enhancements — to handle larger aircraft and increased passenger volumes during the expo.
This year’s 18th edition of Zimbabwe’s premier tourism showcase will, for the first time, be hosted in Mutare under the theme “Devolving Sustainable Tourism Development — Our Future.”
Air Zimbabwe CEO Edmund Makona said the service was part of the airline’s turnaround strategy.
“We are assessing market demand and the viability of making this a permanent route. If the demand is there, we will be ready to add it to our network,” he said.
The schedule connects Victoria Falls, Harare, and Mutare, promoting multi-destination tourism. Travellers from Mutare will also have access to regional and international connections via Harare.
The initiative is supported by the Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe, Airports Company of Zimbabwe, National Handling Services, and the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority.
The airline has also partnered with PayNow to enable online ticket purchases.
Mr. Makona said the flights reflect Air Zimbabwe’s role in national development. “We are more than an airline; we are a bridge that connects people, cultures, and opportunities.”
