A Bindura headmaster has been convicted of theft after diverting Grade Seven examination fees amounting to US$792.
The Bindura Magistrates’ Court found Kudakwashe Tivarige, Headmaster at Sunrise Group of Schools in Maravanyika Village under Chief Masembura, guilty of theft of trust property.
Between February 2024 and January 2025, 12 pupils paid their Zimbabwe School Examinations Council fees through the school’s accounts office.
Tivarige was tasked with registering the pupils at Dengu Primary School, as Sunrise is not an examination centre.
Instead, he pocketed the funds and falsely claimed the registrations had been completed at Maravanyika Primary School.
The fraud came to light when the school director, Martha Masiachengo, confirmed with ZIMSEC that the pupils had not been registered.
A report was filed at ZRP Manhenga, leading to Tivarige’s arrest. None of the stolen money was recovered.
He was sentenced to 12 months in prison. Three months were suspended on condition of good behaviour, and another three months on condition he restitutes US$292.
The remaining six months were converted to 245 hours of community service at Manhenga Clinic.
