A first-year Agricultural Engineering student at Chinhoyi University of Technology reportedly took his own life on Wednesday, 20 August.
The university’s Students Representative Council confirmed the death in a notice, with spokesperson Marlvin Saint Madanda announcing the passing of Abraham Chabata.
Madanda did not provide details regarding the circumstances surrounding Chabata’s death or what may have led to it. He said:
"It is with deep sorrow and heavy hearts that we inform you of the passing of Abraham Chabata, a Level 1.1 Agricultural Engineering student. Abraham tragically took his own life on 20 August 2025.
This loss has sent ripples of grief across our institution and we extend our sincerest condolences to his family, friends, classmates, and all who knew him.
May they find strength, comfort, and peace during this immensely difficult time. As we reflect on this tragedy, we are reminded of the silent battles many among us may be facing.
We urge all students to open up about their struggles and challenges, whether with family, trusted friends, or peer counsellors.
In honour of Abraham's memory and in solidarity with those affected, we are declaring Friday, 22 August 2025, as Black Friday.
On this day, we urge all students to wear black as a symbol of mourning, unity, and shared compassion."
