Parirenyatwa's Adlum Hostel Leads the Way in Modernisation

By Nyashadzashe Ndoro

Significant renovation projects are currently underway at the Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals, including the nurses' residence, the Adlum House and the Mbuya Nehanda Maternity Hospital.

These upgrades aim to modernise facilities and improve conditions for both healthcare professionals and patients.

The nurses' residence, specifically the Adlum Hostel, is 70 percent complete. The renovation of 353 rooms at Adlum House includes comprehensive upgrades to plumbing and electrical systems, and the addition of state-of-the-art bathrooms on each floor.

Previously, the building's capacity was reduced due to its deteriorated state, but the restoration work, coupled with new water systems, is expected to restore its full functionality for up to 353 student residents.

To address power challenges, 200 solar panels have been installed on Adlum House, providing a reliable 120kw solar energy system to supplement the grid. Eight boreholes have also been drilled, ensuring a consistent water supply for the residence, complemented by a 30,000-liter water reserve. The swimming pool at the residence has also been refurbished into a jacuzzi.

At Mbuya Nehanda Maternity Hospital, demolition work has reached 90 percent completion, with renovation work currently at 15 percent.

The renovation projects are being led by Prevail International, a development firm founded by Presidential Advisor Dr. Paul Tungwarara. Prevail International's project manager, Vanessa Butao, highlighted during a recent media tour that the renovations are not merely cosmetic, but critical improvements designed to promote dignity, efficiency, and well-being for the student nurses and future healthcare workers.

Tariro Dondo, Prevail International’s Public Relations Officer, said they have "worked tirelessly on this project."

"We have worked tirelessly on this project. We have done the electric and plumbing works. Previously, there were a lot of leakages in the building. The bathrooms were out of order. But we have fixed that. We have added four extra bathrooms on each floor so that it caters for the 353 students," se said.

Dondo further indicated that the initiative is aligned with national development goals and will be extended to rural health institutions in the future.

“Prevail International is a multi-sector projects company committed to national development. Guided by the President’s mantra of leaving no one and no place behind and we intend to replicate these improvements across other health facilities countrywide,” Dondo said.

The Mbuya Nehanda Maternity Ward and Adlum House are expected to reopen in early September.
