GMB gets major fleet boost to improve grain handling

The Minister of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development, Dr. Anxious Masuka, on Tuesday officially handed over a fleet of new vehicles to the Grain Marketing Board, in a move aimed at enhancing operational efficiency and reducing costs.

The handover includes 20 x 40-tonne grain trucks, 2 x 30-tonne trucks, and 15 single cab vehicles. Dr. Masuka noted that the new fleet will enhance service delivery, contain operational costs, improve turnaround times, and boost staff morale.

Receiving the vehicles on behalf of GMB were Board Chairperson Ms. Joylyn Ndoro and Chief Executive Officer Dr. Edson Badarai.

The GMB plays a critical role in Zimbabwe’s food security strategy, serving as the main conduit for government-managed grain procurement, storage, and distribution.

It operates a national network of depots and silos that receive grain from farmers, particularly maize and wheat, under the strategic grain reserve programme.

In recent years, the GMB has faced challenges related to delayed payments, aging infrastructure, and high transport costs.

The addition of new trucks and service vehicles is expected to help address some of these issues as part of broader agricultural transformation efforts to modernise agriculture and ensure food self-sufficiency through efficient post-harvest management systems.
