Police have apprehended another suspect linked to the daring US$4.4 million armed robbery that occurred at an Ecobank branch in Bulawayo in October 2024.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) confirmed on Friday that 39-year-old Bhekani Mlilo was arrested in Botswana on July 14, 2025, as he attempted to cross into the country from South Africa. Authorities say Mlilo is the third suspect taken into custody following the earlier arrests of Abraham Temayi Vumbunu and Elijah Temayi Vumbunu in South Africa.
The high-stakes heist unfolded in less than two minutes when six masked and armed men stormed the scene as Safeguard Security personnel were loading cash boxes into a van. The attackers, traveling in a white Ford Ranger, overpowered the guards, grabbed the cash trunks, and fled the scene with millions in US dollars.
In a statement, ZRP national spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the latest development, saying the suspect will be extradited once legal formalities are completed.
“The due processes of the law are now taking effect for the suspect’s extradition to Zimbabwe,” said Nyathi. “ZRP is still pursuing other suspects connected to the robbery.”
Investigators suspect the robbery may have been aided by an insider, and the hunt for additional culprits remains active.
