A Chitungwiza man has appeared in court facing charges of theft of trust property after allegedly betraying the trust placed in him to deliver valuable goods.

Simbarashe Makwanya, of Manyame Park, Chitungwiza, appeared before magistrate Ruth Moyo at the Harare Magistrates’ Court charged with theft of trust property.

The State alleges that on April 6, the accused was given 31 travelling bags valued at US$1,912 by Hillary Pedenevhu and was tasked with delivering them to the complainant in Harare.

While en route, Makwanya allegedly asked the complainant to send US$105 to cover customs duty for the bags.

The complainant transferred the money to Makwanya’s EcoCash number.

However, the court heard that Makwanya instead took all 31 travelling bags and the money for his personal use and never delivered the goods or refunded the complainant.

Despite several efforts to recover her property and money, the complainant was unsuccessful and eventually filed a police report.

On June 29, Makwanya was arrested at Beitbridge Border Post.

The total value of the stolen goods and money amounts to US$2,017, and nothing has been recovered.
