A Harare woman has been granted a protection order by the Harare Civil Court after accusing her ex-partner of repeated harassment, physical abuse, and kidnapping.

Naome Zidenga appeared before magistrate Ms Meenal Narotam on Thursday seeking legal protection from Lawrence Tipe, the father of her children, whom she alleged has been assaulting and abducting her since their separation.

“Lawrence is my baby daddy. The problem started when we broke up,” Zidenga told the court. “He insults me and assaults me anytime he wishes, even in front of the children.”

She alleged that Tipe has been forcibly abducting her while she is collecting their children from school.

“He comes with a car, puts a knife on my neck and takes me to a place in Budiriro where there are no people,” she said. “He beats me with sticks, sometimes forces himself on me, and keeps me there for more than two days. When he is done assaulting me, he buys medicine and only drops me off at my house once I’ve recovered.”

Zidenga said her efforts to report the matter to the police have yielded no results, prompting her to seek the court’s protection.

“I have tried reporting the matter to the police multiple times, but I don’t get any response,” she said. “That’s why I have come here to seek a protection order.”

Lawrence Tipe did not appear in court to respond to the allegations.

Magistrate Narotam granted the protection order in favour of Zidenga and advised her to file a criminal complaint at the Mbare Magistrates Court, stating that kidnapping is a serious offence that warrants criminal prosecution.
