Two men have been arrested for allegedly assaulting two female Harare Municipal Police officers during an anti-vending operation in the central business district.
Dzwengwe Murambiwa ,52, of Glen View 7 and Chiwaya Baureni ,39, of Nenyere Flats appeared before magistrate Apollonia Marutya at the Harare Magistrates' Courts facing three counts of assault.
They will remain in custody until June 17, when they are expected to apply for bail.
According to the State, on June 10 around 2:00 PM, three municipal police officers were conducting an operation targeting illegal vending activities in the CBD.
After arresting vendors and confiscating their goods at the corner of Second Street and Nelson Mandela Avenue, the officers instructed the vendors to accompany them to Town House for further processing.
However, as they approached the intersection of Angwa Street and Nelson Mandela Avenue, the accused allegedly confronted them. After questioning the officers about the confiscated goods, the two men reportedly became aggressive despite being shown official identification.
The court heard that the accused took turns physically assaulting the officers and warned them not to return to the area, declaring it a “no-go zone” for Municipal Police. They also instructed the officers to refrain from arresting vendors operating in that vicinity.
Complainants Makona Lita and Mutondo Prisca were allegedly slapped several times in the face, while the third officer, Manyepwa Edwick, was pushed.
Makona sustained a swollen face and an injury to her left eye, while Mutondo suffered facial swelling.
The incident was reported, and following investigations, the two suspects were arrested. A third accomplice remains at large, and their identity is yet to be established.
