In Comes Tagwirei

Businessman Kudakwashe Tagwirei has entered Zimbabwe’s Senate after President Emmerson Mnangagwa used powers created by Constitutional Amendment Act No. 6 to appoint 10 additional senators.

Parliament was formally notified of the appointments on Tuesday, with Tagwirei joined by Jabulani Sibanda, Mary Mliswa, Nokuthula Matsikenyere, Godwills Masimirembwa, Lucy Chitaga, retired General Gibson Mashingaidze, Makhosini Hlongwane, Brilliant Dube and Irene Mutumba.

Tagwirei’s appointment is likely to attract particular attention given his growing prominence in Zimbabwe’s political and economic affairs and his reported links to the ruling establishment.

The appointments also mark one of the first significant political consequences of the constitutional changes, which created additional Senate seats that can be filled through presidential appointment.

Tagwirei’s move from the boardroom into Parliament could therefore signal a convergence between business interests and formal political power at a time when debates over succession, patronage and the influence of wealthy individuals within ZANU-PF are intensifying.
