What began as a seemingly harmless request for alcohol ended in a near-fatal assault, leaving one man hospitalised and another facing serious criminal charges.

Kelvin Zambuko ,31, of Village 4, Chikwirira in Chiredzi, has been arrested and charged with attempted murder after allegedly attacking Brighton Mupfumba ,40, a fellow villager, with a stone to the head. The violent incident reportedly occurred on May 29 at Chikwirira Township after Brighton refused to buy Zambuko a beer.

Masvingo Provincial Police Spokesperson, Inspector Kudakwashe Dhewa, confirmed the incident to TellZim News and urged communities to resolve disputes peacefully without resorting to violence.

According to police, Brighton had gone out drinking with friends that afternoon but failed to return home. His father, Moses Mupfumba ,73, began searching for him but only found him the following day, lying unconscious near the township.

Moses rushed his son to Chikwirira Clinic. When Brighton later regained consciousness, he revealed that Zambuko had struck him on the head with a stone and assaulted him further after he declined to buy him beer.

Brighton’s condition was deemed serious, and he was later transferred to Chiredzi General Hospital for further treatment.

Meanwhile, Zambuko is assisting police with investigations as he remains in custody, facing attempted murder charges.
