In a bid to clarify widespread confusion, Econet Wireless has confirmed that its popular mobile money platform, EcoCash, will retain its name and branding, despite recent reports suggesting otherwise.
Instead, it is EcoCash Holdings, the former parent company of EcoCash, that is set to undergo a name change to TN CyberTech Investments Holdings Limited, pending shareholder approval.
The confusion stems from recent developments involving EcoCash Holdings, a company born out of a 2018 corporate restructure by Econet Wireless. At the time, Econet carved out its fintech and health-related businesses including EcoCash, VAYA, Econet Insurance, Econet Life, MARS Zimbabwe, and Maisha Health Fund and bundled them under the newly created EcoCash Holdings Zimbabwe Limited.
However, in April 2024, Econet Wireless reversed this structure, bringing the EcoCash mobile money business and several others back under its direct control. This left Steward Bank as the only remaining entity under EcoCash Holdings.
Earlier this year, Tawanda Nyambirai’s TN Holdings acquired a controlling stake in EcoCash Holdings, effectively taking over Steward Bank. As a result, the company now plans to change its name to TN CyberTech Investments Holdings Limited, pending shareholder approval at an Extraordinary General Meeting on June 13, 2025.
This proposed rebrand is what prompted misleading interpretations that EcoCash itself was changing its name a claim Econet has now publicly denied.
“The continued use of the name EcoCash Holdings will confuse the public, as the same name is being used by the mobile money platform, EcoCash (Pvt) Ltd, which is now an Econet Wireless Zimbabwe Limited subsidiary,” reads a statement from the company. “As such, the Board believes that the change of company name is in the best interests of the company and of all shareholders.”
According to the shareholder circular, the rebranding also aligns with a new strategic vision. Steward Bank, the main asset under the renamed entity, plans to transform its physical branches into unmanned technology centres offering remote digital banking services.
“The pursuit of this vision and mission will entail the transformation of the bank’s branches to unmanned technology centres that will house terminal points through which customers will be remotely assisted to transact,” the circular reads.
In short, while EcoCash Holdings is changing its name and charting a new course under new ownership, the EcoCash mobile money platform remains unchanged both in function and in name and firmly under the Econet Wireless umbrella.
