Trump Administration Bars Harvard from Enrolling Foreign Students

U.S President Donald Trump

The Trump administration has revoked Harvard University’s authority to enroll international students, a dramatic move that has sent shockwaves through the higher education sector. The Department of Homeland Security, led by Secretary Kristi Noem, cited concerns over antisemitism on campus, the university’s alleged promotion of “woke” ideology, and purported ties to the Chinese Communist Party.

The decision immediately jeopardizes the legal status of more than 6,800 international students at Harvard, many of whom now face uncertainty regarding their education and residency in the United States. The administration also froze US$2.2 billion in federal funding and threatened to strip Harvard of its tax-exempt status.

This action is part of a broader campaign targeting elite academic institutions. Federal authorities had previously demanded detailed records from Harvard on the activities of international students, particularly those linked to pro-Palestinian protests. The university refused, citing violations of institutional independence and constitutional rights.

In response, Harvard has filed a lawsuit challenging the administration’s actions and has vowed to support affected students.

Critics have denounced the crackdown as an authoritarian overreach that undermines academic freedom and sets a dangerous precedent for government interference in education.
