Zim U 17 mighty warriors concluded their 2025 COSAFA U17 Girls Championship campaign with a 3-2 defeat to Mozambique in the third-place playoff, securing a fourth-place finish in the regional tournament.
Mozambique struck early, finding the back of the net within the first seven minutes to seize an early 1-0 advantage. Despite the initial setback, Zimbabwe showed great resilience and responded swiftly. In the 20th minute, Shantell Mugute found the equalizer, bringing the game level at 1-1 and reigniting hope for the Young Mighty Warriors.
However, Mozambique were not done yet. They restored their lead before the break, putting Zimbabwe on the back foot once more. But the Zimbabwean side, determined not to go down without a fight, rallied again in the second half.
In the 66th minute, star forward Winnie Mapuwa stepped up with a stunning free-kick to level the score at 2-2. The goal marked her sixth of the tournament, underlining her importance and consistency throughout the competition.
With extra time looming, Mozambique delivered a decisive blow in the 82nd minute, reclaiming the lead and holding on to seal a 3-2 victory. The loss meant Zimbabwe missed out on a podium finish but concluded the tournament with pride, having shown character and determination.
