The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention has firmly denied reports suggesting the World Bank instructed the institution to cut dozens of staff positions, labeling such claims as “factually incorrect and misleading.”
The response comes after a Devex article published on May 10 titled “Exclusive: World Bank directs Africa CDC to cut dozens of positions” claimed the international financial institution was behind proposed job reductions at the continental health body.
In a statement, Africa CDC refuted the article’s central claim, stating unequivocally: “Africa CDC is not implementing layoffs, nor has it received any directive from the World Bank to eliminate specific positions.”
The agency clarified that the staffing review currently underway is an internal initiative, aimed at improving operational efficiency, ensuring long-term sustainability, and aligning with Africa CDC’s expanding role in supporting African Union member states.
“This internal review is part of a strategic realignment designed to strengthen our ability to deliver on public health priorities across the continent,” the statement said.
