A 19-year-old man has landed in court after allegedly stealing a Toyota Prado worth US$55 000 from a bar parking lot in Harare — only to be caught driving the vehicle hours later.

Tinos Matsika appeared before the Harare Magistrates Court, where he admitted to stealing the luxury vehicle. He is expected to return to court tomorrow for plea recording.

According to the State, led by prosecutor Lovet Muringwa, the incident occurred on April 26 at around 9 PM. The complainant, accompanied by his uncle Cosmas Simyanga, had parked his grey Toyota Prado (Engine Number 1KD2330525, Chassis Number JTEBH3FJ30K117039) at Zindoga shops before entering a bar to watch a football match.

Around 1 AM, the complainant noticed his car keys were missing from where he had kept them. After failing to locate them inside the bar, he stepped outside only to find that the vehicle was also gone.

Simyanga alerted the community to the theft through a phone call.

Just a few hours later, Matsika was intercepted while driving the stolen vehicle in the Stoneridge area by a man only identified as Joshua, who made a citizen's arrest. The suspect was then handed over to ZRP Waterfalls for further handling.
