A Harare man is facing charges of embezzlement after allegedly misusing funds entrusted to him by a friend based in Australia.

McDonald Katumba (31), of Aspindale Park, is accused of converting US$58,000 to his own use. The money was intended for the purchase of trucks and residential stands, as well as the transfer of vehicles to a non-governmental organization.

According to the prosecution, Katumba received US$27,000 from his friend, Nashile Chibanda, in August 2023 to purchase a residential stand. However, instead of using the money for its intended purpose, Katumba allegedly squandered it.

Between August 2023 and January 2024, Katumba was also entrusted with three vehicles by Chibanda: a Mazda Demio and two Nissan Note. Chibanda instructed Katumba to hand over the vehicles to the CEO of a non-governmental organization, but Katumba reportedly failed to comply.

In addition, Katumba is accused of embezzling US$20,000 that Chibanda had given him to purchase two Toyota Toyoace trucks for Zesa Holdings. Despite receiving the funds, Katumba failed to deliver the trucks.

The total prejudice to Chibanda is estimated to be US$58,000.
