President Emmerson Mnangagwa has proclaimed February 3, 2024 as the by-elections date for Pelandaba, Goromonzi South, Seke, Chegutu West, Mkoba North and Zvimba East.

According to the Statutory Instrument 235 of 2023, the President also fixed December 18 as the date for the sitting of thr Nomination Court.

“....fix Saturday the 3rd of February, 2024, as the day on which a poll shall be taken if a poll becomes necessary in terms of section 46(17)(c) of the Electoral Act [Chapter 2:13],” read part of the notice.

“Given under my hand and the Public Seal of Zimbabwe at Harare, this 23rd day of November in the year of Our Lord two thousand and twenty-three.”

The first by-election will be held on December 9 to replace the 14 opposition Citizens Coalition for Change lawmakers who were recalled by Sengezo Tshabangu, who claims to be the opposition party’s secretary-general.

CCC and its leader Nelson Chamisa, however, argue that Tshabangu is an imposter who is being used by enemies to destabilize the CCC. They went to court with this argument but failed to convince the judges.

On Friday, the Supreme Court dismissed an appeal by the first batch of recalled MPs to overturn a high court judgment that validated their recall by Tshabangu. The appeal was thrown away due to technicalities related to the proper filing of legal documents.
