Agro Chemicals loses US$57 worth of goods after guards get US$10 bribe from thieves

Two men who were given US$10 by thieves for them to steal items worth more than US$57 000 at Prime Agro Chemicals have been arraigned before the court.

Oscar Bete, 68, of Eastview Phase 16 and Talent Chonzi, 37, of Jacha in Epworth, appeared before magistrate Ethel Chichera, facing theft allegations.

The State, through prosecutor Zororai Nkomo, alleges that on August 2023, at around 1600 hours, went to Prime Agro Chemicals situated at number 75 Martin Drive, Msasa, in Harare after the complainant had locked his property, leaving several goods, including herbicides, pesticides in his warehouse.

The premises were secured by Safeguard alarm systems and security guards day and night.

The two were given US$10 and let people, who are still at large enter the premises with a car and stole 3 657 × 1kilogramme Delete Glypho herbicide, 1 051 ×1 litre Bentazone herbicide, 1 950 × 500 grammes metaxyl/mancozeb fungicide all worth US$57 772.

On August 25, 2023, the complainant went to work and discovered the offence.

The actions of the two led to a loss of US$57 772 worth and nothing was recovered.

Chichera ordered the two to deposit US$100 each as bail.

They will appear in court on September 20 for their routine remand.
