Two employees who stole a company receipt book and collected money on behalf of the company from its clients, issuing those receipts, were arraigned before the courts after stealing more than US$12 000.

Ashley Tubby Mawarire, 30, of Overspill Epworth and Davison Tanyaradzwa Zowa, 30, of Trakel Court appeared before magistrate Dennis Mangosi at the Harare Magistrates’ Courts accused of theft of trust property.

The complainant in the matter is Avakash International Private Limited that is in the business of selling pharmaceuticals and was represented by Takudzwa Kanengoni, the company’s human resources manager.

The State, through Zororai Nkomo, alleges that in November 2022, Mawarire went to Avakash’s different clients, following up on payments on their customer accounts as per his normal duties and was expected to receipt all the cash received from such clients and thereafter hand over the cash to the company upon return on a daily basis.

Mawarire and Zowa were employed by Avakash International as a driver and accounting officer respectively.

Mawarire later hand over the receipts to Zowa, who had access to Avakash’s accounts system to clear the clients’ debts, thereby retaining the collected cash.

This trend continued until March 2023 when Avakash discovered the offence.

On April 3, Avakash International reported the matter to the police amd investigations led to the arrest of the two on April 11.

A total of US$12 034 was stolen and nothing was recovered.

Mangosi order Mawarire and Zowa to pay ZWL$150 000 bail. They were instructed to report to CID CCD once per week on Fridays.

They will appear in court on May 24 for a trial date.
