A Belvedere man who lied to a woman via Facebook that he was able to facilitate for her child to play for Manchester City Football Club and took money from her in the process has appeared in court.

Agrippa Guti, 35, of Belvedere, was brought before magistrate Dennis Mangosi at the Harare Magistrates' Court charged with fraud.

The State, alleges that between December 2022 and March 2023, Guti interacted with Patience Muchetwa, 38, on Facebook and told her that he was a soccer coach at City Academy and could take her child into his soccer academy and facilitate soccer trials and tours to Manchester City club in the United Kingdom.

Muchetwa has a child who is under 14 who is obsessed with soccer and she took the child to Guti and he “passed” the trials.

Guti told Muchetwa to pay for the uniforms, track suits and air fares to England for the trials at Manchester City Football Club which were taking place on February 17, 2023.

Muchetwa paid all the money that Guti demanded which ranged to around US$560 and waited for the date the child was supposed to travel.

When the day of travel passed, Guti disappeared, barred and blocked Muchetwa on all forms of media communication they once had.

On February 17, 2023, Muchetwa filed a police report after realising that she had been duped by Guti.

The police went to his house and upon knowing that they were looking for him, he scaled over the precast wall and fled.

He was later arrested at OK Marimba in Harare.

Muchetwa lost US$560 and nothing has been recovered.

Mangosi granted Guti ZWL$100 000 bail and he was ordered to report at Milton Police Station once per week.

He will appear in court on April 6, 2023.
