Five people died con the spot while three others were seriously injured in a road accident yesterday at the 159km peg along the Harare-Masvingo highway.
The driver of a Mitsubishi Canter, registration number AFV 0664 that was travelling towards Masvingo with two passengers on board, lost control of his vehicle after it burst a front tyre. According to national police spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi, the driver of the Mitsubishi Canter “encroached onto the opposite lane where he had a head-on collision with another motorist who was driving an unregistered Mazda Familia motor vehicle due north towards Harare with four passengers on board.
“All the four occupants in the Mazda Familia motor vehicle died on the spot.”
The bodies of the deceased were ferried to Chivhu District Hospital mortuary for post mortem while the injured were referred for medical attention.
Police warned motorists against travelling with loads beyond the capacity of their vehicles so as to curb road accidents.
In another fatal road crash at the 20km peg along the Harare – Chirundu Road, two people died on the spot and three others were seriously injured.
“The driver of a Toyota D4D registration number AFN 2068 with four passengers on board which was driving towards Harare collided with the trailer of a Scania haulage truck, Horse registration number CC 21 JT GP, which was travelling towards Chinhoyi,” said police in a statement on their official Twitter handle.
