Chitungwiza junior councillors recently joined forces to complement efforts by the Council to preserve cleanliness in the dormitory town by sweeping and picking up litter.

The clean-up campaign started at the Head Office along Tilcor Road to TM Pick n Pay in Zengeza 2.

One of the Junior Councillors Keith Chitepo said the campaign was meant to motivate residents to change their behaviour and maintain clean areas in their respective areas to prevent diseases.

“As residents we sometimes fail to recognise our role in waste management and become unwilling to pay for service delivery or participate in clean-up campaigns.

“Waste dumps are prime breeding sites for communicable disease vectors such as rodents, mosquitoes and houseflies, which can worsen the prevalence of waterborne diseases such as cholera and typhoid.

“Waste from dumpsites pollutes underground water, which has become the main source of water for the majority as the residents continue to experience water shedding,” he said.

Most drainages are clogged due to solid waste which has also been causing flooding especially during this rainy season, he added.
