Gwelo Rangers Academy’s future in the Central Region Women’s League is hanging in the balance following a dispute that has cast uncertainty over the club’s participation in the Munhumutapa Cup.
What initially appeared to be a straightforward replacement arrangement following W.I.N.X FC’s withdrawal has developed into a situation that could have wider consequences for Gwelo Rangers and the Central Region women’s football programme.
W.I.N.X FC reportedly withdrew from the Munhumutapa Cup after encountering financial difficulties. In response, Central Region football authorities are said to have approved Gwelo Rangers as their replacement before the competition draw was conducted.
Gwelo Rangers subsequently found themselves drawn against Hardrock Queens, another Central Region representative.
It was at that stage that questions were reportedly raised over the club’s participation, with Hardrock understood to have challenged the decision to replace W.I.N.X FC with Gwelo Rangers.
The disagreement has left Gwelo Rangers unhappy, and there are growing indications that the club could consider pulling out of the Central Region Women’s League if the matter is not resolved.

For a club that had reportedly already begun preparing for the Munhumutapa Cup, the uncertainty could prove costly.
Sources have also claimed that Gwelo Rangers had reached an arrangement with W.I.N.X FC concerning compensation for taking over the vacant place. However, ZimNow has not independently verified the existence or terms of any such agreement, while the clubs involved have yet to publicly confirm the matter.
For Gwelo Rangers, the issue is no longer simply about who plays whom in the Munhumutapa Cup. It is about whether the club can have confidence in the structures governing its participation in the league.
The development comes after ZIFA issued a statement updating the fixtures for the Women’s ZIFA Munhumutapa Challenge Cup.
According to ZIFA, W.I.N.X FC and Midlands Terrain FC, who had qualified for the Round of 32 on merit, initially withdrew from the competition, citing financial challenges.
However, ZIFA said the withdrawals were not processed in accordance with the competition’s Rules and Regulations and that both clubs had subsequently been reinstated.
As a result, W.I.N.X FC and Midlands Terrain FC replaced Gwelo Rangers and Herentals Kwekwe, respectively, who had been included in the competition following the initial withdrawals.
