Man Poses as a Police Superintendent in Firearms Licence Scam

A Harare man has appeared in court accused of impersonating a senior Zimbabwe Republic Police officer and defrauding a security company of US$1 080 in a fake firearms licence renewal scheme.

Luka Fungurani (51) appeared before Harare magistrate Ruth Moyo facing two counts of fraud and one count of impersonating a police officer. He was remanded in custody pending a bail determination.

Prosecutor Chipo Muvhamba told the court that Fungurani allegedly misrepresented himself as a ZRP superintendent with the authority to process and renew firearm certificates.

The State alleges that Jerusalem Security Solutions (Private) Limited director Dhumisani Melsketcher Karakadzai relied on the representation and engaged Fungurani to renew certificates for six company firearms.

The firearms included a 12 Bore Mossberg shotgun, two CZ pistols, a .303 rifle and three other shotguns.

Fungurani allegedly produced fake firearm certificates, claiming the renewals had been processed through official police channels.

However, investigations allegedly established that he was not a police officer and had no authority to issue or renew firearm licences or certificates.

The State alleges that the company paid US$1 080 for the services, but the money has not been recovered.

Fungurani remains in custody awaiting the court’s decision on his bail application.
