From Zimbabwe to the World Stage: Osward Lifumbe’s Yogasana Breakthrough in India

In a moment that marks both personal triumph and a growing cultural bridge between nations, Zimbabwean athlete Osward Lifumbe has returned from India with two bronze medals at the inaugural World Yogasana Sports Championship—a competition that is rapidly redefining yoga as a disciplined, performance-based sport on the global stage.

The championship, held in India, evaluates athletes on precision, flexibility, balance, strength, and endurance, moving beyond traditional meditative practice into structured competitive performance. For Zimbabwe, Lifumbe’s achievement represents more than medals; it is an early step in the country’s emerging participation in yogasana as a global sport.

Lifumbe also attended the 12th International Day of Yoga, held on Saturday at India House under the auspices of the Embassy of India, Harare, an event that drew a wide range of participants including diplomats, community members, and wellness enthusiasts.

Speaking to Zim Now at the event, Lifumbe expressed gratitude and a clear vision for expanding the practice locally.

“It is so amazing that the Indian House hosts this event to expose many Zimbabweans to this. It is my wish to introduce yoga to many Zimbabweans,” he said, thanking the Embassy of India for the opportunity to compete at such a high level and to represent Zimbabwe internationally.
