Zim, Belarus Sign Sports Cooperation Deal To Boost Athlete Development

 

Zimbabwe has strengthened its international sporting ties following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Ministry of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture and the Belarus aimed at enhancing athlete development and improving the country’s competitiveness on the global stage.

The agreement was signed in Minsk by Sports Minister Anselem Sanyatwe and Belarusian Minister of Sports and Tourism Sergei Kovalchuk, establishing a framework for long-term cooperation across multiple sporting disciplines.

Under the partnership, Zimbabwean athletes, coaches and technical officials will gain access to advanced training facilities, specialised coaching programmes and modern sports science expertise in Belarus. The collaboration covers several disciplines, including football, tennis, swimming and athletics, with a strong focus on skills transfer and knowledge exchange.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Sanyatwe described the agreement as a key step toward modernising Zimbabwe’s sports development systems and nurturing high-performance athletes. He said increased international exposure and technical cooperation would help strengthen national sporting structures while improving athlete performance.

During the visit, the minister toured the Belarusian State University of Physical Culture, where he observed advanced athlete training methods, modern infrastructure and science-based approaches to sports development. Insights from the tour are expected to inform Zimbabwe’s ongoing efforts to upgrade sports infrastructure and institutional capacity.

Officials say the agreement reflects the growing importance of sports diplomacy as a tool for strengthening international relations, youth empowerment and cultural exchange. 

Through strategic partnerships such as this, Zimbabwe aims to expand opportunities for athletes while positioning itself as a country committed to long-term sporting excellence.
