Musonda Takes Charge as Zimbabwe Women’s Team Manager

Former Zimbabwe women’s cricket captain Mary-Anne Musonda has been appointed Team Manager of the Zimbabwe Senior Women’s National Team, marking a new chapter in her long and distinguished association with the sport.

The appointment comes only weeks after the 34-year-old announced her retirement from all forms of cricket, ending a career that spanned nearly two decades and was highlighted by leadership, resilience and several historic achievements.

Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) Managing Director Givemore Makoni welcomed Musonda’s appointment, describing it as a significant boost for the women’s game in the country.

“Mary-Anne has been an outstanding servant of Zimbabwe Cricket whose leadership, discipline and passion for the women’s game have always stood out,” said Makoni. “She brings invaluable experience from her years as an international cricketer and captain, and we believe her presence within the team environment will greatly contribute to our efforts to rebuild a strong and competitive women’s side.”

He added that Musonda’s appointment aligns with ZC’s broader strategy of retaining former players in influential roles to support the continued development of women’s cricket in Zimbabwe.

Musonda last represented Zimbabwe at the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 in Abu Dhabi. After initially being sidelined by injury, she later decided to retire from the game and focus on the next stage of her career.

A right-handed middle-order batter, Musonda played 16 Women’s One-Day Internationals, scoring one century and one half-century. She also featured in 58 Women’s T20 Internationals, recording five half-centuries following Zimbabwe Women’s attainment of official international status.

Before Zimbabwe gained official international recognition in women’s cricket, Musonda had already established herself as a key figure in the national set-up, representing the country in more than 100 matches, including regional qualifiers and bilateral series.

One of the defining moments of her career came in October 2021 when she became the first Zimbabwean woman to score an international century. Captaining the side on her ODI debut, she produced an unbeaten 103 against Ireland Women at Harare Sports Club, leading Zimbabwe to a memorable four-wicket victory.

Having been part of the national team since 2006, Musonda’s journey mirrors the growth and evolution of women’s cricket in Zimbabwe. Beyond the cricket field, she has also excelled academically, earning a Master’s degree in Development Finance from the University of Cape Town and establishing herself as a role model for aspiring athletes.

Her transition from player to team manager is expected to provide valuable leadership and continuity as Zimbabwe Women continue their efforts to strengthen their presence on the international stage.
