Man Beaten to Death Over Handbag Theft

 

Five people appeared before the Harare Magistrates’ Court facing murder allegations after they allegedly assaulted a man to death while accusing him of stealing a handbag belonging to one of the accused persons.

The accused are Florence Mawere, 54, Joel Mawere, 19, Cosmas Takaendesa, 36, Kudiwa Siyamwi, 22, and Shingirayi Chawira, 35.

Prosecutors allege that on 23 May 2026, the now deceased was walking along Selsey Road in the Grobby Park area of Waterfalls when he was confronted by the group, who accused him of stealing Florence Mawere’s handbag.

The court heard that the accused allegedly began assaulting the man before tying him with a rope to a ZESA pole.

They allegedly continued attacking him using tree branches, polythene pipes and sjamboks while also pouring cold water on him, resulting in his death.

Police reportedly recovered the rope and pipes allegedly used during the assault, and the items are being held as exhibits.

The deceased has not yet been identified.
