Zimbabwean Cuisine Takes Centre Stage as RTG Celebrates Africa Day

Rainbow Tourism Group is set to celebrate Africa Day with a nationwide showcase of traditional Zimbabwean cuisine, culture, and music as the hospitality group seeks to promote local heritage through food.

The celebrations, scheduled for May 25 across RTG properties nationwide, will feature buffet-style traditional meals during lunch and dinner sittings, with prices starting from US$28 per person.

In a statement ahead of the commemorations, RTG said Zimbabwe’s culinary traditions remain central to the country’s identity, with indigenous dishes continuing to connect communities and preserve cultural heritage.

“Food is never just sustenance; it is a cultural archive,” the group said, describing traditional meals as expressions of resilience, celebration, and unity passed down through generations.

The company noted that while Zimbabwe is internationally known for its wildlife and tourist attractions, the country’s deeper cultural identity is reflected in the preparation and sharing of traditional foods such as mazondo, oxtail stew, mutakura, muboora unedovi, and sadza rezviyo.

RTG said a renewed appreciation for authentic local cuisine is emerging, particularly during Africa Month celebrations, as more Zimbabweans and international visitors seek meaningful cultural experiences through food.

At the Rainbow Towers Hotel and Conference Centre, the group hosts weekly traditional food experiences at Harvest Garden Restaurant, where guests are served a variety of indigenous meals prepared using traditional methods and ingredients.

“At Harvest Garden Restaurant every Wednesday, guests experience a sensory journey that brings the warmth of a traditional Zimbabwean kitchen into a premium hospitality setting,” RTG said.

Participating venues for the Africa Day celebrations include New Ambassador Hotel, Kadoma Hotel and Conference Centre, Bulawayo Rainbow Hotel, Victoria Falls Rainbow Hotel, A’Zambezi River Lodge, and Montclair Resort and Conference.

Guests attending the celebrations will also be treated to traditional beverages such as maheu and chibuku, while live African music performances are expected to provide entertainment throughout the day.

“To further celebrate African identity and heritage, guests are encouraged to wear African attire, with prizes to be awarded for the best-dressed attendees,” the company said.
