CCTV Exposes Cash Booker in US$48k Cash Shipment Theft

A Chisipite-based cash booker employed by a security company is accused of stealing US$48 000 from a cash-in-transit consignment after allegedly tampering with sealed cash bricks and replacing US$50 notes with US$10 notes.

Bruce Kanavheti, 32, appeared before the Harare Magistrates’ Court facing allegations linked to the theft of funds destined for Innbucks Microbank in Harare.

According to prosecutors, Kanavheti worked for Wellock Security Private Limited as a cash booker responsible for counting, sealing and dispatching cash handled through the company’s cash-in-transit operations.

The court heard that on May 11, 2026, Kanavheti received various cash consignments at the company’s offices along Dulwich Road in Chisipite. Among the funds was US$100 000 packaged into four sealed bricks of US$25 000 each, which were scheduled for delivery to Innbucks Microbank in Northridge, Harare.

Prosecutors allege that Kanavheti tampered with the sealed bricks by removing three bundles of US$50 notes from the middle of each package and replacing them with US$10 notes before resealing the cash parcels.

It is alleged that US$12 000 was removed from each brick, bringing the total stolen amount to US$48 000.

The alleged theft was discovered on May 13 after Innbucks Microbank alerted Wellock Security that the sealed cash bricks appeared suspicious.

Upon opening the packages, company officials reportedly found bundles of US$10 notes hidden between US$50 note bundles, confirming that money was missing.

Investigations later focused on Kanavheti after company officials reviewed CCTV footage from May 11. The footage allegedly showed him acting suspiciously while handling the cash, including hiding bundles of money under a desk before leaving the office with them wrapped in a jacket.

When questioned by his employer on May 18, Kanavheti allegedly admitted to taking the money, leading to the involvement of detectives.

Police later recovered US$10 000 hidden in a bushy area along North Road in Chisipite following indications made by the accused. A further US$800 was recovered from his residence.

Authorities say a total of US$10 800 has so far been recovered from the alleged stolen funds.
