The Avenues Clinic Praised for Supporting National Health Delivery Efforts

Deputy Minister of Health and Child Care Sleiman Kwidini has commended The Avenues Clinic for its role in strengthening healthcare delivery through private sector support to the national health system.

Speaking during International Nurses Day commemorations at the Harare-based medical institution, where he was guest of honour, Kwidini said collaboration between public and private health institutions remains essential in ensuring accessible and effective healthcare services.

“We know that private institutions complement government efforts, especially in healthcare system delivery, to make sure that a healthy nation is a productive nation, whether in the private or public sector,” he said.

Kwidini stressed that national development depends on the overall wellbeing of citizens, highlighting the need for physical, mental, emotional, social and economic health.

He also paid tribute to nurses, describing them as the backbone of every health institution and underscoring the importance of improving their welfare and working conditions.

“We respect our nurses and doctors and we want them to be happy when they are rendering care to patients,” he said.

Speaking at the same event, Principal Nursing Officer Florence Ogwal said the clinic continues to invest in specialised nursing education to enhance professional development and improve patient care outcomes.

“Through partnerships with government institutions and the University of Zimbabwe, we have been training our students and other practitioners,” she said.

Ogwal revealed that in 2026 the Avenues Clinic Postgraduate School introduced an Oncology and Palliative Care Nursing Programme aimed at expanding specialist training opportunities for nurses.

She also highlighted clinical milestones achieved by the institution, including the safe delivery and discharge of premature babies weighing as little as 600 grams.

General Manager Sibusisiwe Ndhlovu said nurses remain central to healthcare delivery, noting that their work saves lives daily.

“Nursing is a calling. We honour you for answering that call. Many of us passed through nurses’ hands when we were born,” she said.

This marked the second consecutive year that The Avenues Clinic has commemorated International Nurses Day, celebrating nurses for their dedication, compassion and contribution to healthcare services.
