COH traffic officer hit by two kombis in CBD Chaos

A Harare traffic enforcement officer was struck by one kombi and then immediately run over by the onbe he had just clamped in a dramatic morning incident in the city centre.

Daniel Takaendesa, 40, an officer with Harare Traffic Enforcement, suffered a fractured left leg after the sequence of events unfolded at the corner of Charter and Ruzende streets.

Court proceedings revealed that Takaendesa and six colleagues were on duty when they stopped a Nissan Caravan, registration AHA 0675, driven by Jordan Pateya, 29, of Chitungwiza.

As part of the enforcement process, Takaendesa placed a wheel clamp on the vehicle’s front right tyre.

Prosecutor Takudzwa Mutyavaviri told the court that Takaendesa was first struck on the right shoulder by a passing Toyota Hiace, registration ADZ 3851, whose driver did not stop. The impact knocked him to the ground.

Moments later, while Takaendesa was still down, Pateya allegedly attempted to move the clamped vehicle driving forward and reversing despite the immobiliser.

In doing so, the Nissan Caravan reportedly ran over Takaendesa’s left leg. He was rushed to Harare Hospital, where he was treated for a fractured leg.

Pateya appeared before magistrate Tapiwa Kuhudzai facing a charge of negligent driving.

The second motorist, who allegedly struck the officer first, has not yet been identified.
