Man in court over friend’s death after snooker hall brawl

A 37-year-old man appeared before the Harare Magistrates' Court facing murder allegations following a violent altercation at a local snooker hall on March 15.

Challenge Kutadzaushe, an employee at the Zimbabwe National Army Ordnance Supply Depot and a resident of Budiriro 5B, is accused of fatally assaulting his friend, Tadiwananshe Pedzisal Matapeta (31), after a dispute involving an okapi knife.

The matter was reported to police by Samson Muchedzi (38).

According to court proceedings, the incident began when Kutadzaushe allegedly snatched an okapi knife from Muchedzi, triggering a confrontation with Matapeta.

Prosecutors told the court that the situation escalated when Kutadzaushe allegedly punched Matapeta in the face, causing him to fall backwards and strike the back of his head on the edge of a snooker table.

It is further alleged that Kutadzaushe dragged the injured man to a nearby shack where he left him lying motionless.

The court heard that the following day Kutadzaushe attempted to feed Matapeta, but police officers later found him still inside the shack with the deceased, leading to his arrest.

The case is pending before the court and investigations are continuing.
