Zimbabwe Cricket Appoints Edward Rainsford as NPL Manager

Zimbabwe Cricket  has appointed former international cricketer Edward Rainsford as the new National Premier League (NPL) Manager, a move aimed at strengthening the country’s top club cricket competition and improving player development pathways.

Rainsford, who is also a respected cricket commentator, brings extensive experience from both his playing career and involvement in domestic cricket. His appointment forms part of ZC’s broader efforts to professionalise and grow the National Premier League.

ZC Managing Director Givemore Makoni welcomed the appointment and expressed confidence in Rainsford’s ability to lead the league forward.

“We are delighted to appoint Ed Rainsford as NPL Manager,” said Makoni. “His experience as a former Zimbabwe international and his deep knowledge of the domestic cricket landscape make him well suited to lead the next phase of the league’s development.”

Makoni added that the appointment reflects ZC’s commitment to strengthening club cricket structures and improving standards of competition across the country.

“This appointment reflects our commitment to strengthening club cricket structures, improving standards of competition and creating sustainable pathways for emerging talent across the country,” he said.

In his new role, Rainsford will oversee the growth and administration of the NPL, with a strong focus on improving competitiveness and aligning club structures with long-term development goals.

One of the key priorities will be the introduction of structured age-group competitions within the league. The programme will initially involve the NPL’s top eight clubs, along with two additional teams to ensure wider geographical representation.

Participating clubs will be required to establish junior teams across three categories: Under-13 boys, Under-15 boys and girls, and Under-17 boys and girls. Clubs will also be expected to appoint qualified coaches and managers to guide these youth teams and support effective player development.

To support the initiative, Zimbabwe Cricket will provide financial grants to participating clubs through their respective provincial associations.

Makoni said investing in youth structures is crucial for the future of the game.

“This initiative is about building a strong pipeline for the future,” he said. “By investing in youth structures at club level, we are not only giving young players valuable game time but also strengthening the foundation of our domestic cricket system.”
