Zimbabwe’s flagship water infrastructure project has reached another technical milestone, with the Zimbabwe National Water Authority confirming completion of quality control inspections at Block 3 of the Gwayi-Shangani Dam, paving the way for concrete placement.
“Quality control inspections at Block 3 are complete, with final checks underway before concrete placement,” ZINWA said, presenting the development as steady progress toward delivering a project widely regarded as central to long-term water security.
The Gwayi-Shangani Dam is expected to supply up to 220 million cubic metres of water annually for irrigation, industrial use and domestic consumption, particularly benefiting communities in Matabeleland North Province and the city of Bulawayo, which has faced persistent water shortages over the years.

The dam forms a critical component of the National Matabeleland Zambezi Water Project, a long-standing national initiative designed to stabilise water supply in Zimbabwe’s southern regions while supporting agricultural expansion and industrial growth.
Despite incremental construction progress, the project continues to attract scrutiny over delivery timelines and execution efficiency. First conceived decades ago, the dam has experienced repeated delays and escalating costs, largely driven by funding constraints, fiscal pressures and intermittent construction activity.
Analysts note that while technical milestones signal forward movement, questions remain around final completion timelines and the pace at which associated infrastructure — including pipelines and distribution systems — will be delivered to fully unlock the project’s intended economic and social benefits.
Authorities maintain that ongoing works demonstrate renewed momentum, but stakeholders continue to watch closely for clearer completion benchmarks as Zimbabwe seeks long-term solutions to recurring water supply challenges.
