Finance Minister Mthuli Ncube has been recognised with the Distinguished Service Award by the African Economic Research Consortium for over three decades of contribution to economic research and policy development across Africa.
The Ministry of Finance said the award acknowledges Ncube’s long-standing involvement with AERC, which began in 1992 when he served as a Senior Researcher and Resource Person while lecturing at the London School of Economics.
He later joined the AERC Board in 2004, served as Vice Chair between 2007 and 2010, and became Chairperson from 2010 to 2016.

The Ministry added, “Hon. Prof. M. Ncube received the Distinguished Service Award… recognising over three decades of leadership in promoting economic research and policy development across Africa,” highlighting his pivotal role in shaping the institution’s direction.
Ncube also made history as the first African to chair the AERC Board, a milestone that underscores “his exceptional leadership and commitment to the organisation’s mission,” according to the Ministry. During his tenure, AERC strengthened both its research output and its influence on policymaking across the continent.
“Under his guidance, AERC continued to produce high-quality research that informed policy decisions across Africa,” the Ministry noted, emphasising that his leadership championed “excellence, innovation, and collaboration,” and helped deepen partnerships with governments and international institutions.
Founded in 1988 and headquartered in Nairobi, AERC has trained more than 4,000 economists at postgraduate level, many of whom now serve in central banks, governments, international financial institutions, and academia.
