Zimbabwean musician Gift Amuli was detained on Wednesday during a Zimbabwe Music Rights Association (ZIMURA) workshop at the Zimbabwe College of Music by individuals identifying themselves as law enforcement officers, an incident that has heightened tensions within the country’s music rights body.
According to ZIMURA spokesperson Dereck Mpofu said, the the specific allegations against Amuli remain unconfirmed, but there are strong indications that the detention is linked to ongoing internal governance disputes within the ZIMURA board, particularly involving long-serving board member and disputed Vice Chairperson, First Farai Batani.
