Mufakose Tout Jailed 20 Years for Killing Colleague Over Sadza Dispute

A dispute over sadza has ended in tragedy, with a Mufakose-based tout sentenced to 20 years in prison for the murder of his colleague near the Lyton Flyover in Harare.

The High Court sitting in Harare convicted Byson Mwachande, 31, of murdering his friend and fellow tout, Michael Salimon, on February 13, 2025.

The court heard that tensions arose after Mwachande discovered Salimon sharing a plate of sadza with another colleague and demanded repayment for the meal.

The situation escalated when Mwachande insisted on taking Salimon’s US$20 share of the day’s earnings as compensation.

When the colleague refused to hand over the money, Mwachande became violent, forcing the two to flee towards the Workington industrial area.

Mwachande pursued them in a pickup truck, caught up with them, and jumped from the moving vehicle.

He struck Salimon once on the forehead with a 470-gram stone, killing him instantly.

A post-mortem examination confirmed that Salimon died from a severe head injury, including a skull fracture and subdural haemorrhage.

Mwachande fled the scene but later surrendered himself to the police on February 15, 2025.

In handing down the 20-year prison sentence, the court emphasised that violence is never a solution to disputes.
