
Sweeney Mushonga has been elected chairman of the Northern Region Soccerleauge, marking the beginning of a new chapter for football administration in the region.
Speaking to the media after securing the position, Mushonga expressed gratitude and outlined an ambitious vision focused on unity, growth and professionalism.
To the players, coaches and Northern Region stakeholders, and to the Northern Region family, thank you for the incredible honour,” said Mushonga. “I am truly humbled and excited to have the opportunity to serve as chairman for the Northern Region Soccer League, where I will build upon the successes of our previous chairperson, Solomon Mgawazi.”
Mushonga said his leadership would prioritise connectivity, innovation and inclusivity across the league, stressing that development of the game would be central to his tenure. “My vision is pretty simple. I want to foster a more connected league, a more innovative league and a more inclusive league for the betterment of our football,” he said. “I commit to work hard, to serve the people and to be a listening person.”

He also highlighted the importance of improving infrastructure, raising competition standards and attracting sponsorship. “We will continuously raise our competitions, improve our game and our infrastructure, and look for more sponsorship so that our game becomes more exciting,” Mushonga said.
The new chairman emphasised integrity and fair play as guiding principles. “I will try my best to lead with integrity and make sure that Northern Region remains the best league within the Zimbabwean framework,” he said. “Our football must always be played within the tenets of fair play, our rules and our regulations.”
Player development and international exposure are also high on the agenda. “We will leave no stone unturned to create pathways for our players to play abroad and in more competitive leagues,” Sweeney said. “That exposure will greatly help in the development of our game.”
On sponsorship, Mushonga revealed encouraging progress. “We do have challenges in terms of technical sponsorship, but I am happy to say that going into next week, we should be able to send out invitations for the unveiling of a sponsor,” he said. “The date has already been set for Saturday next week, the 20th of December. It’s been work, work and more work.”
Meanwhile, Cuthbert Chitima was elected vice chairman of the Northern Soccer Region. Thanking those who supported his candidacy, Chitima promised to represent the interests of clubs and stakeholders.
“I would like to thank those who voted for me,” said Chirima. “What I can promise the electorate, the clubs and all stakeholders is that we are able to deliver exactly what the clubs want.”
