ARDA Delivers Historic Crop to Secure Food Future

The Agricultural and Rural Development Authority has further strengthened its position at the centre of Zimbabwe’s food security drive after delivering half of the country’s total winter wheat harvest for the year.

Zimbabwe recorded an estimated 640,195 tonnes of wheat—one of the strongest outputs in recent seasons—signalling renewed vitality in the agricultural sector.

This performance has been attributed to favourable weather patterns and intensified government support programmes, factors that have also contributed to the upward revision of the national economic growth forecast to 6.6 percent.

ARDA says the achievement reflects improved management across its estates and joint ventures, supported by precision farming techniques and expanded irrigation infrastructure.

The authority maintains that its mandate remains anchored on strengthening national food sovereignty through dependable and efficient production systems.

According to ARDA, delivering more than half of the season’s wheat output does more than boost cereal availability. It stabilises the market, fortifies national resilience against supply shocks, and is expected to significantly reinforce the Strategic Grain Reserve.

This year’s strong showing enhances Zimbabwe’s capacity to maintain consistent supply and price stability.

The record harvest also highlights the progress being made to climate-proof agriculture, particularly through large-scale irrigation projects and broader support initiatives that have enabled farmers to maintain production in the face of variable weather conditions.

Analysts say the milestone is an indication of a sector regaining momentum. “The figures point to a recovering agricultural sector and an institution delivering on its mandate,” agricultural economist Dr Reneth Mano said, noting that ARDA’s impact extends beyond raw tonnage to building a stable and reliable agricultural production base.

Experts share this view, adding that the authority’s output reflects broader progress toward establishing a more predictable and secure agricultural foundation for the wider economy.

As the summer cropping season begins, ARDA says it intends to maintain its current momentum by improving access to quality inputs and accelerating the rehabilitation of irrigation systems.

The authority emphasises that these measures are essential to advancing Zimbabwe’s agricultural transformation and ensuring long-term food stability.
