The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development has launched a digital e-tag tolling platform, aimed at modernising toll collection, reducing congestion, and curbing revenue leakages.
The e-tag system allows for seamless, cashless payments as vehicles pass through tollgates, minimising stoppages and enhancing efficiency. According to the Zimbabwe National Road Administration (ZINARA), the project aims to streamline toll collection and provide a more convenient experience for motorists.

Speaking during a media tour of Zimbabwe's tollgates, Ministry Permanent Secretary Engineer Joy Makumbe said, "We are rolling out this system at various toll plazas, and this is a testimony that we are developing our infrastructure to ensure efficiency and effectiveness."
The e-tag system uses radio frequency identification (RFID) technology, where an RFID reader mounted on the canopy emits radio waves to identify an electronic tag affixed to a vehicle's windscreen. The system validates whether the vehicle account is prepaid or exempt, and the boom opens automatically.
The introduction of the e-tag system is expected to improve the ease of doing business and reduce congestion on major highways.
